Majuli Island

About This Location

Majuli, the world's largest inhabited river island (880 sq km on the Brahmaputra River), is a UNESCO aspirant and the cradle of Assamese neo-Vaishnavite culture. The island has 22 satras (Vaishnavite monasteries), bamboo houses on stilts, potters making traditional masks, and wetlands teeming with birds. The changing light on the Brahmaputra, the bamboo village lanes, and the monastery mask-making create extremely distinctive photography.
