Rishikesh, Uttarakhand
Rishikesh sits at the foothills of the Himalayas where the Ganga flows swift and clear. The two iconic suspension bridges — Lakshman Jhula (90m, 1929) and Ram Jhula (same style) — draped in Tibetan prayer flags and with temple spires on either side, create extraordinary backdrops. The evening Ganga Aarti (prayer ceremony) with hundreds of diyas (lamps) floating on the river is one of India's most moving scenes.
