Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh
Fatehpur Sikri is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Mughal Emperor Akbar's royal capital built in 1571, abandoned in 1585, and left completely intact. The red sandstone city contains the Buland Darwaza (world's largest gateway, 54m), Jama Masjid, Panch Mahal (five-storey pavilion), Birbal's House, Jodha Bai's Palace, and Diwan-i-Khas. Being a ghost city, it retains an eerie grandeur — expansive, uncrowded, and atmospheric.
